Seeding lawns in the fall can be tricky, especially when weeds are still a threat. The best way to mitigate the threat of weeds this seeding season is to use mesotrione.

What is Mesotrione?

Mesotrione is a selective herbicide that can control broadleaf and grassy weeds. It uniquely targets weeds without harming desirable cool- and warm-season turf. Mesotrione’s origins can be traced back to a natural chemical called leptospermone, which is produced by several plants native to Australia and New Zealand. Researchers discovered it after seeing that a bottlebrush plant was able to naturally control the weeds around it. This chemical was then studied and led to further research, which led to the development of mesotrione.

How Mesotrione Works

Mesotrione works by inhibiting the HPPD enzyme in weeds, stunting their growth and preventing the creation of carotenoids—the compounds that protect chlorophyll. The weeds then turn a white or bleached color (due to chlorophyll degradation) before dying.

Why Mesotrione is Ideal for Seeding Time

Weeds will often germinate before grass seed. Other herbicide products cannot be applied to newly seeded areas for a period of time—usually three to four weeks—as they will kill the grass seed. This gives the weeds nearly a month to grow, which is certainly not something you or your customer want. Mesotrione allows you to seed properties with the added benefit of weed control, reducing the likelihood of callbacks and upset customers.

When to Apply Mesotrione

Mesotrione should be applied before grass seed germinates. If mesotrione is applied after the grass seed has germinated, it will die. Apply mesotrione on the same day you seed and water it in. Weeds that are not controlled in one application will be weakened enough to not pose a threat to the new grass seed.

Mesotrione Fertilizer and Standalone Products

Using a granular starter fertilizer like 21-22-4 with 0.08% Mesotrione or a spray product like ArmorTech Trione will eliminate weeds and protect new seeds. If your customer is starting a new lawn, 21-22-4 is especially effective when seeding bare areas.

Mesotrione can be used on most cool- and warm-season grasses. Check the label of your starter fertilizer or liquid product to ensure that it’s approved for use on the lawn you’re treating. Using mesotrione may slightly increase your input costs, but it will likely lead to a pristine lawn and a satisfied customer that recommends your services.

The ability to selectively target weeds without harming new grass makes mesotrione an important tool for any lawn care operator. If you think mesotrione is a good fit for your fall seeding plans, reach out to your ATS rep for more information.
